Although Pompei was the first to be discovered years after the devistation from Vesuvius, Herculaneum nearby, was better preserved and there are even second stories on buildings; a rare sight. Herculaneum suffered from poisonous gasses and mud flows and not the destructive pyroclastic flow, like Pompei adding to its preservation.

During a festival at Easter time in Florence, a years old tradition takes place where a symbolic cart is burned. Fireworks and the smoke they produce make the duomo a very sightly and eerie place as it is back-lit by the early morning sun.
